We've got a blast from the past for sale here at the shop; say hello to the Onderwater Tandem XL!
If you've been around our shop for long enough, you may recall seeing one of these beauties on our floor many years ago. This particular bike is available on consignment; we sold it back in 2018, and the original customers family has outgrown it. The Tandem XL can haul up to four human beings: the pilot sits in the rear (presumably an adult), one passenger sits in between the pilot and their handlebars and does not contribute to pedaling, and the two front passengers can contribute to pedaling (or not if they so choose; more on this later). We're selling this Onderwater Tandem XL for $2,500 (cash, check, or ZellePay only).
If you have questions on the Onderwater Tandem XL, please feel free to call or text us at (312) 643-1670, email at [email protected], or pay us a visit! Scroll down for more photos and detailed information.
The Tandem XL comes equipped with the NuVinci continuously variable gear hub (now known as Enviolo), a fully enclosed chain case, cafe lock, skirt guards, and a sturdy rear rack suitable for a set of Clarijs or Ortlieb bags.
A view from the pilots perspective. One of the best features of riding a bike like this or a bakfiets is that you can see your kids, and they can see where you're going instead of staring into your back while riding on a rear carrier rack.
The front dynamo hub powers both the front and rear lights. This is an ideal set up because you don't have to take your lights off the bike to charge them; just hop on, start pedaling, and your lights will turn on!
One of the coolest features of the Tandem XL is that each rider that contributes to pedaling has their own freewheel, meaning that everyone can choose to pedal or not!
Urban Arrow and Riese & Müller e-bakfiets owners will recognize this piece of technology! The steering rod connects the rear-most handlebars to the front fork, which turns the front wheel side-to-side.
One lucky rider gets to sit here and let everyone else do the all the work!
A partially enclosed chain-case protects your pant legs / skirt on one side, but is open on the other side so you can easily access the chain for cleaning, de-greasing, and lubrication.
Pictured here is the NuVinci / Enviolo shifter, which shows you which gear your in using this clever little "biker-on-a-hill" diagram. Twist the shifter away from you, and the hill grows larger, which puts you in your low gears for starting off and climbing hills. Twist the shifter towards you, and the hill will flatten out, which puts you in your higher gears for riding on flat ground and maintaining higher speeds.
Providing the stopping power for the Onderwater XL are Shimano roller brakes; a great option for reliable stopping power in all weather conditions. With roller brakes, the complete braking mechanism is enclosed so that adverse weather conditions do not effect your braking power and you wont pick up any contamination from the street.
