Energize your commute and go further while staying fresh with the Brompton Electric folding bike. It's still a Brompton - same ingenious bike, same compact fold - but with an integrated motor that will assist your pedaling output to tackle hills and headwinds with ease and get you off the line with a boost at stop lights.
As part of the Class 1 eBike category, the Brompton Electric provides assistance only while pedaling. The maximum assisted speed is 15mph with an average range of 20-45 miles; you can use your own pedal power to ride faster and further, too. Anytime you are riding and do not require pedal assistance, you can simply turn it off and ride it just like a normal Brompton with nearly zero rolling resistance from the motor.
The Brompton Electric was developed in collaboration with Williams Advanced Engineering - experts in Formula One & Formula E motorsports racing. The electric assist system is a custom 250W front hub motor powered by a 300Wh battery. To regulate speed and make sure this extra power translates into a smooth riding experience, the bike continually analyzes data from two sensors: one in the bottom bracket that measures the rider’s cadence and power and one within the motor that measures the speed of the bike.
The battery pack is cleverly integrated inside the Essential bag that is included with the bike. Like traditional Brompton luggage, the Essential bag attaches to the front frame of the bike so it doesn't impact stability while you steer. Removable with just one click, it's easy to carry the folded bike in one hand and the battery bag over your opposite shoulder. This is particularly useful for multi-modal commuters who regularly bring their bike on public transport.
The Essential bag is 1.5L with some additional space for the charging cable and other small items. You can also opt to increase your storage with the City bag - an available accessory that has room for larger items like a laptop.
Just like the original Brompton, the Brompton Electric folds within 20 seconds into a shape roughly 24" x 24" x 12", all while providing a ride that is as comfortable as you'd expect from a normal (non-folding) bike.
The number of potential advantages this packable bike can grant is staggering. If you're concerned about bike theft and also live in a small apartment, it's a bike you can easily bring and store inside with you (and carry up the stairs if need be!). If you have a lengthy commute which is a tangled mess of transfers from bus to train to bus, riding the Brompton can cut down on complexity, allowing you to ride part of the way and stow the folded bike easily on a train or bus. If you live in a place where weather changes and you dislike riding in inclement weather, the Brompton lets you ride when it's nice and easily take the bike home with you in a carpool with a friend or coworker, a taxi, a bus, or a train. The list goes on, but you get the idea. The Brompton is nearly infinitely versatile.
The Brompton Electric is available in three colors: two standard colors - Gloss Black and Gloss White - as well as one premium option - Bolt Blue Lacquer, which is $250 additional. There are two handlebar options: M-type (a medium-rise bar) and H-type (a high-rise bar). There's also two gear options: 2 or 6 speed.
This one is a Turkish Green, M-type, 6 speed, which is achieved via a Sturmey-Archer 3 speed hub and a proprietary Brompton 2-speed derailleur.
Two flat-bar style brake levers control a pair of road style caliper rim brakes. The right brake lever has an attached bell.
As with most of the bikes we sell, this model comes with fenders. Its tires are a pair of Schwalbe Marathon Racers, a light and grippy, puncture-resistant tire.
The saddle included is Brompton's black saddle.
