The Packster 70 is Riese & Müller’s revision of the family cargo bike, having made several leaps forward in design and function. This specific model of Packster is the Packster 70 Vario. The frame design has a 70cm long (or about 27.5") cargo bed, giving ample elbow and leg-room to the kids. The bike's ergonomics and aesthetics are streamlined by the incorporation of internal cable-routing. The Packster 70 features a rigid aluminum frame and comes with a front suspension fork with 70mm of travel. Some other components worth highlighting are the quick-release adjustable stem, which allows riders of different heights to raise or lower the handlebars with ease--an ideal feature for families. The seatpost height of the Packster is also easily adjustable with a quick release lever.
The double-walled and eyeletted alloy rims give the bike a stout foundation, especially when paired with the durable Schwalbe Big Ben Plus and Schwalbe Super Moto-X tires (on the front and rear, respectively). The wheels have hydraulic disc brakes installed, for optimum stopping power, even in slippery conditions with heavy loads. Riese & Müller has outfitted the Packster 70 Vario with Gates CDX Carbon Belt Drive for the quietest and lowest-maintenance drivetrain available. Add to that the Enviolo N380 Continuously Variable Transmission gear hub and you have a family cargo bike that incorporates the most advanced and convenient 21st century technology.
Bosch provides the motor, display, and battery--the entire e-system--for the Packster 70 Vario. It comes with Bosch’s Generation 4 Cargo Line motor--the most powerful eBike motor ever produced by Bosch. This motor provides 85Nm of torque and up to 400% pedal assistance. The Packster 70 is a Class 1 eBike, meaning its motor provides assistance only while the rider is pedaling, and will stop providing assistance once the bike’s speed reaches 20 mph.
This Packster 70 features an industry-leading 1250Wh-worth of batteries. Housed in the base of the storage box to keep the center of gravity low and stable, the DualBattery technology gives the Packster 70 a range that can outlast virtually any other family cargo bike. Lastly, the rider can keep track of speed, mileage, battery life, and more, using the multi-functional Nyon display from Bosch.
The cargo box on the Packster 70 is constructed from EPP (expanded polypropylene) foam, a lightweght material superior to the common EPS (expanded polystyrene) in regard to its environmental impact. The standard double child seat is made of 100% recycled material, features 5-point seat-belts, and can accommodate two children up to 10 years old, or one occupant up to 5’5” tall (1.65m). This Packster is configured to include a third rear-facing child seat as well as an auxiliary baby seat which can be installed abreast of one of the forward-facing child seats (installing the baby seat results in a total capacity of 1 child and 1 infant). Also included is a rain canopy complete with windows to keep passengers dry, a rear cargo rack and a lockable glove compartment.
This Packster 70 Vario is built with several upgrades which Riese & Müller calls their Performance Package. This package includes upgrades to brakes (via Tektro TRP C2.3 hydraulic disc brakes), lights (via Supernova M99 Mini Pro headlight and M99 Tail Light), and a suspension seatpost for a more cushioned ride.
