Gazelle (given the title Royal Dutch Gazelle by Princess Margriet in 1992) is the renowned leader in Dutch bike manufacturing since 1892. Their factory in Dieren produces over 250,000 bikes a year. From their conception to the present day, they've focused on making comfortable, safe, and stylish bikes that can be depended on daily. Furthermore, Gazelle is a forerunner in the eBike industry, early on having researched and developed the integration of this new technology with the classic, daily-riding bicycles for which they've been known for over 120 years. The result: Gazelle has a catalog of pedal assist electric bicycles that is incomparable.
The Avignon C380 HMB, a new model for 2023, is an advanced eBike with a Bosch mid-drive motor. Just like you'd expect from a classic Dutch bike, it has an upright riding posture, a low step-through style frame for easy mounting and dismounting, a rear rack for panniers, front and rear LED lights that run off the bike's battery, and full coverage fenders for riding more comfortably in wet weather. At first glance the Avignon almost doesn't let on that it's even an eBike, mainly due to the battery which integrates seamlessly with the bike's down tube. When riding the bike, the pedal assist provides a smooth input that feels like a steady tailwind more than an electric motor. The Avignon is a Class 1 eBike, meaning it only provides motor assistance when the rider is pedaling, and will stop providing assistance when the speed reaches 20 mph. The sensation of the pedal assist is smooth, not jarring or jerky.
The bike's battery, drive unit, and display (in essence the entire eSystem) are all made by Bosch and undergo rigorous third party testing for quality. The Avignon is equipped with Bosch's new Smart System. Using the eBike Flow app, the rider can control all the functions of the Smart System and customize the bike to the rider's preferences. The Smart System also keeps the bike up-to-date with the latest software updates, offers new riding modes like "auto," which will automatically select and change the level of assistance/torque, and it offers bike lock and tracking features, too. Bosch's convenient and easy to read Intuvia 100 display is centrally mounted on the handlebars and informs the rider on details such as current speed, trip distance, and remaining battery life. From this display control unit the rider can easily toggle the motor between the various assist modes: Eco, Tour, Sport, Turbo, and Auto. The bike is equipped with Bosch’s Smart System Performance Line motor (75 Nm of torque) and an integrated 625 Wh battery.
The Avignon features the Enviolo 380 Continuously Variable Transmission gear hub. This innovative hub is a fully stepless transmission--an infinite number of gears. Combine that with the whisper-quiet and grease-free Gates CDX carbon belt drivetrain and you have a low-maintenance, intuitive bike--a truly advanced example of eBike technology. Plus, the front and rear lights have cutouts making them visible from the sides of the bike. So whether it’s a daily commute or escaping the city on a long ride, the Bosch motor and the ample gear range of the Enviolo hub will get you where you want to go with ease, and the wider 2.15” tires and front fork suspension will make sure it’s a comfortable journey.
