The Gr8 (pronounced “Great”) is the lighter, smaller version of the WorkCycles Fr8. Interestingly, Workcycles was formed in 2003 by an American ex-pat named Henry Cutler. Cutler's philosophy has been to thoughtfully design and build quality, practical bikes without regard to industry trends or snazzy graphics. Like its big brother the Fr8, the Gr8 can be configured for many purposes: commuting, carrying a child, or shared use. Regardless of how you accessorize the bike, it will be a sturdy, low-maintenance, sportier-handling city bike.

Thanks to its Adaptive Seat Tube design, a single frame adjusts in seconds to fit riders from about 4'11" to 5'9". The Gr8's 26"x2.00" Schwalbe Big Apple tires provide cushion and puncture resistance. The wheel size coupled with the low step-through height give it a low center of gravity, making the bike easy to mount and maneuver, even when weighted down with cargo.

The components on the bike are noticeably the same as nearly every other Workcycles bike we stock: a Shimano Nexus 8 speed internal gear hub, Shimano roller brakes, a Shimano dynamo hub which powers front and rear LED lights, a fork spring to steady the front wheel when parked on its double-leg kickstand, and a rear wheel lock. A fully-enclosed chaincase and full coverage fenders keep you and your drivetrain dry. Should you want to carry cargo, a frame mounted front rack and a sturdy rear rack are available as add-ons.

This review is long overdue. After a few years of thinking about, poring over, testing, and then buying an inexpensive sort-of, Dutch bike, I finally purchased a WorkCycles GR8 in February 2017 (3 1/2 years ago) from Jon. I will start off by saying this is the best purchase I have ever made. Although I still love my touring bike for longer jaunts, the enjoyment I get from riding my GR8 is unequaled. I use it as a daily commuter and for shopping (I have managed 6 full grocery bags!), and also for anything under a long weekend ride (although it works well for those too if not in too much of a hurry). I love how simple and easy it is to ride in any clothing, from a suit to a bathing suit. I can strap a beach chair on the rack, and put a backpack in the basket with all I need for the day. It is almost unbelievably comfortable. The rear wheel lock is simple genius, the full chain case makes chain maintenance almost non-existent and protects pants legs, the dynamo lighting is convenient and safe, and I never need worry about staying out after dark. Riding it gives me a joy that's just like when I was a kid on a single speed coaster brake bike - simple pleasure and freedom. I tried several of the models JC Lind carries and all were wonderful. I liked the industrial look and the sturdy feel of the GR8, but would have enjoyed any of them equally. And Jon and his colleagues are fantastic - genuinely nice, expert, and with a true desire to help. I can't recommend the shop or the bikes highly enough. Just try it and you'll see!
