Workcycles began in 2003 when Henry Cutler, an American ex-pat living in Amsterdam, decided to put his skills in industrial design to use by designing and making the most practical, comfortable, durable, daily-use bikes in the world. Workcycles is now famed for many of its unique, problem-solving designs, but the company also sells bikes that are essentially modified and improved versions of classic Dutch bikes.
The Workcycles Secret Service Step Through is the "sportiest" model of bike that the Dutch company Workcycles makes. We're using the term "sportiest" liberally. The Secret Service is still a hefty Dutch bike, but it is specifically designed with a modern riding geometry thanks to its thinner tires (28" x 1.40"), tighter wheelbase, partially swept back handlebars, and steeper head tube angle. Yet like all Workcycles, the Secret Service is durable, comfortable, upright, and capable of riding daily on rough city streets throughout all four seasons. It makes an excellent bike for those with a moderate length commute and/or slightly hilly topography on their route.
The components on the bike are noticeably the same as nearly every other Workcycles bike we sell: a Shimano Nexus 8 speed internal gear hub, Shimano roller brakes, a Shimano dynamo hub which powers front and rear LED lights, a fork spring to steady the front wheel when parked on its double-leg kickstand, and a fully-enclosed chaincase. The sturdy rear rack and full-coverage fenders complete the ensemble of useful features, ensuring you can carry your goods in panniers or saddlebags.
Contributing to the Secret Services's timeless aesthetic are a Brooks B67S sprung leather saddle, wheel guards covering the rear wheel, and a glossy black, durable paint job. The Secret Service also has the unique feature of mounting points for an optional frame-mounted front rack.

The Workcycles Secret Service “step through” is simply the “king” (or “queen,” if you prefer) of Dutch commuter bicycles. We procured two from JC Lind Bike Co. We were familiar with a number of makers and purveyors of the Dutch style “oma” bike, having ridden them in the Netherlands with the family. Jon at JC Lind carries bikes by other makers, and they’re very nice and quite capable machines, and you’re buying them from a dealer who is simply the top of the heap in terms of customer service and knowledge of both the product and the customer! But, we were impressed by the “bullet proof” feel and construction of the Workcycles: From the frame geometry and build to the paint and finishing, to the silky smooth drivetrain, the Workcycles are in a class by themselves, and the Secret Service is also a versatile machine that combines the best attributes of both the “commuter” and the “commercial hauler” varieties of Dutch bikes! They’re well balanced and they handle splendidly. Coming from a high-end “road bike” and mtb collection, I recognize that these bikes are designed differently: They have to be. I’d really never use a carbon fibre road racer or a mountain bike for commuting or transportation for a litany of reasons. These Dutch bikes are perfect in every respect for doing the jobs they were made to do, and they’ll give you a lot of joy while they’re doing it! Now, they make a “step through” and a “step over.” The “step through” is perfect for both genders: Really difficult to manage a knee length coat for me with a step-over, and in Europe, I’ve seen multitudes of males on them. I also found the step-through much more convenient and easier to deal with in “stop - start” urban traffic for obvious reasons, and much less fatiguing. Just as important, I cannot recommend highly enough Jon and his staff at JC Lind. The bikes are great: But, it’s Jon and his knowledgeable and capable staff that are truly exceptional! Mechanically, these bikes are relatively basic — quite unlike working on a $15,000.00 road bike. We live in west Michigan, and whenever we’ve needed a little help with an adjustment or a repair (one minor adjustment after about 2500 miles, by the way!), I just call. Jon and his staff first identify the issue; then they give me a list of the couple of basic tools I need; then, they talked me through the adjustment on the phone. Armed with this knowledge, I can “help myself” going forward, if needed. This level of personalized service is so rare these days, and is the hallmark of JC Lind Bike Co. Jon and his staff have simply exceeded any and all expectations! They are just exceptional in every respect. The Workcycles are great bikes and we’d buy them again; but you also “buy” your seller, and the combination of the quality of the bike and the truly outstanding dealer as exemplified by Jon is simply amazing. Highly recommend!
